Japan's Rabbit Island (Okunoshima)

Last year in April, I went to visit Okunoshima (a.k.a. Rabbit Island) in the Hiroshima prefecture. It was a 4-hour car ride from Osaka to Tadanoumi Port in Hiroshima and from there, we took a 15-minute ferry ride to the island.

If you're going by train, you need to get off at Tadanoumi JR station and from there it takes around 3 minutes to get to the port by foot. There are ferry rides every 30 - 45 minutes so you can choose what time of the day to visit.

Once we arrived on the island, we rode a free shuttle bus that took us to the National Park Resort Hotel, which appears to be the only resort hotel on the island. It's also the only place where you can eat! You have the option to walk to the hotel which will take about 15 minutes and you may already see some rabbits along the way.

If you want to feed some rabbits, I recommend that you bring your own rabbit food or buy at the port before riding the ferry. They do not sell rabbit food on the island.

I must admit that I was expecting to see groups of rabbits, because that's what I saw on Youtube (LOL). But no, the rabbits were scattered around the island. Nonetheless, I was still happy I got to see and feed some rabbits.

The view around the island is also VERY beautiful! There are walking trails so it's very easy to go around. You can also rent a bike if you want to go cycling. Okunoshima was a poison gas factory during World War II and so you will see ruins all over the island too.

Oh and by the way, they were also doing a stamp rally when we went to visit, so I got this badge as a prize when we got back to the souvenir shop at the port.

If you want to know more about ferry fares, timetables and dos and don'ts on the island, you may check Rabbit Island's website by clicking here.
